The final design for the third Route 66 mural at Boswell Park was approved Tuesday by the Lebanon-Laclede County Route 66 Society board, a big step toward completing the $75,000 project.

The mural, titled “Nelson Family Legacy,” is a tribute to the family that donated 40 acres of land for Route 66 west of Missouri 5 in Lebanon, then built and operated several iconic businesses in an area that became known as “Nelsonville.”

As reported in a 1926 Lebanon newspaper, Col. Arthur T. Nelson then “began the establishing of what has grown into a village in itself, with filling station, the inn, cottages for tourists, each cottage distinguished by the name of a State, equipped with beds and facilities for cooking, toilet accommodations, restrooms – everything for the comfort and convenience of travelers.”
