The Neosho Newton County Library Board of Trustees and staff are hosting a grand artwork unveiling and donor recognition reception with Neosho artist Doug Hall, and philanthropist Judy Haas Smith.
The mural will reflect Neosho’s Big Spring Bluff, and how Doug Hall believes the land probably looked in the 1700s when the Osage Indians lived around the hills and wetlands of the area.
The original oil painting for this tile mural was commissioned by Haas, who is donating the tile mural rendition to the Library’s new addition next to the Community Room. Haas was inspired in memory of her grandmother, Maude Stewart Haas, who told her stories of Indians camping on the Neosho Big Springs grounds for generations.
Local tile mural designer, Paul Whitehill, owner and founder of Tile Mosaic & Mural Design, has teamed up with Neosho born-and-raised frontier artist, Doug Hall to create a one-of-a-kind mural for the new addition of the Neosho Newton County Library. Whitehill, of Joplin, turned the painting into a 6’ wide x 8’ tall public art mural utilizing 12” x 12” ceramic tiles. The mural installation, overseen by both Doug Hall and Paul Whitehill, began on Saturday and was completed the following day on Sunday, September 9.
An unveiling of the mural will take place Thursday, September 13, 2018 from 5:30 PM – 7 PM. Refreshments will be served at 5:30, with the unveiling set for 6 PM. The event will be held at 201 West Spring Street in Neosho, MO.
